Get the extended answer and more…: What Is Stoppage Time?A soccer game is 90 minutes, but the clock never stops while the ball is in play. That’s called stoppage time (or added time), and it’s why…

Football’s whole rhythm in four steps.
The offense gets four chances to gain 10 yards. Those chances are called downs. Everything else starts making more sense once this clicks.
1st
Fresh set of chances. The offense usually has 10 yards to go.
2nd
They run another play. The yards left change based on the result.
3rd
Pressure rises. Fail here, and the fourth-down decision gets interesting.
4th
Go for it, kick a field goal, or punt the ball away. That decision is strategy.
