How Do the MLB Playoffs Work?
The 30-second answer
Twelve teams make the MLB playoffs with six from each league. They play knockout rounds: the wild-card round is best-of-3, the division series is best-of-5, and the league championship and World Series are each best-of-7. “Best-of” just means the first team to the magic number of wins moves on which are 2, 3, or 4, depending on the round. The higher seed hosts more games, which is why teams fight all season for home-field advantage.
The slightly longer version
A “series” is the playoffs’ basic unit: a short set of games where the first team to a certain number of wins advances and the loser goes home. One bad night doesn’t end your season the way a single-elimination tournament does.
It opens with the wild-card round: a best-of-3 sprint, with the higher-seeded team hosting all the games. Survivors move into the division series with best-of-5, first team to three wins. The higher seed hosts games 1, 2, and a deciding Game 5, the 2-2-1 home split you’ll hear broadcasters mention.
Then come the league championship series and the World Series are both best-of-7, first team to four wins, with home games split 2-3-2. Win your league and you’re in the World Series; win that and you’re the champion. Every round resets the slate: regular-season records only decide who hosts, not who advances.
What to watch for:
- The series score, not the game score. In October, “up 2-1 in the series” matters more than tonight’s score and broadcasters will keep showing it.
- The home split flipping. In a best-of-7, games 3, 4 and 5 are at the other team’s park (the 2-3-2 split) where a series can look completely different after the move.
- “If necessary” games. Games 5, 6 and 7 only happen if neither team has reached the magic number yet and that’s why late-series games feel so big.
- Win-or-go-home nights. Once a team has 3 wins in a best-of-7, every game after that is an elimination game for the team behind.
Say this out loud
“It’s best-of-seven and first to four wins the pennant.”
“They’re up 2-1 in the series, and the next three are at home.”
“That’s an elimination game if they lose then the season’s over.”
